WHO IS THE SAVE OUR STREAM TEAM?

Save Our Stream is an environmental education and outreach group that was pioneered in 2003 and consists of three 10th grade students from Hawken Upper School in Gates Mills Ohio. Evin McMullen, Angela Primbas and Amanda Weatherhead, also known as the members of the SOS team, researched and discovered significant problems with the Brook Trout and the streams in the watersheds of Northeast Ohio.

We knew we wanted to work on a challenge that was local, as well as a problem that was related to wildlife and the environment. We could think of no better issue to take on than that of the deteriorating quality of our watersheds and the threatened but important Native Ohio Brook Trout.

We were involved with many people and groups to gain an in-depth understanding of stream health and the brook trout habitat requirements and the brook trout's reproductive cycle as can be seen by these pictures. We also organized events and activities to create an awareness and a call for action to address this problem.

After reviewing our work and findings, we decided together along with our coach Irene McMullen to enter the Christopher Columbus Awards in 2003 (Read more about the Christopher Columbus Awards in Accomplishments). This competition awards students who devise plans and act to make differences in their communities. We have been fortunate to have been recognized for our work and to have received grants to further our efforts. Please read about our stewardship efforts further and we invite you to join our stewardship.

OUR MISSION

It is Save Our Stream's mission to educate the public about the sensitive Native Ohio Brook Trout population in a fragile enviornment and enlist their efforts to protect the Chagrin River Watershed it lives in. There are two main aspects to our mission. The first is the education aspect in which we are designing a curriculum for middle and high school students to help them understand the need to protect the brook trout. It will also include information about the ways members of the Brook Trout's community can preserve and protect the enviornment around them. The second aspect is hands-on. This aspect includes the reconstruction of habitat and plantlife around streams where it has been diminished through the efforts of volunteers.

COMMUNITY

Citizen involvment and participation are the most crucial aspects for the preservation of the watershed and of the Native Ohio Brook Trout. Save Our Stream is based in Chesterland Ohio and if you have any questions feel free to contact us. Some of our volunteer events are described on our events page. Also visit the Geauga Park District website for more community education and stewardship programs.
